“The Poacher” was surprised to be taken to task two weeks ago, over the use of a “z” rather than the letter “s” in his previous programme article, the critics pointing out that such usage was an Americanism. However “the Poacher’s” favourite book of reference,

“The Poacher” is of course far too polite to tell his critics to “shove it where the sun doesn’t shine”

The New Concise Oxford Dictionary (6th edition, circa 1976) confirmed his suspicions that a little learning is a dangerous thing, especially in others and that both versions are equally acceptable.  Before anyone suggests that “the Poacher” is being pedantic they should refer to the above mentioned tome for clarification. “The Poacher” is of course far too polite to tell his critics to “shove it where the sun doesn’t shine” if they didn’t like it – no, he’s not because that is precisely what he advised them to do.

It has been a disappointing three weeks for Morgan supporters, starting with the narrow win against Irvine, closely followed by a sub-par display and a loss, in a force 9 gale, against Ardrossan Accies who have become something of a bogey team for Morgan in recent seasons.  It all culminated for “the Poacher” and his chums at McKane Park last Saturday, when Morgan allowed Dunfermline two simple scores, one of which came from an unlucky bounce of the ball (for Morgan, but very lucky for the home side) which allowed their right wing an easy run in for a try and an early 7 point lead for his team.  Morgan came back strongly to establish a lead of 11 points to 7 late in the second half, only for Dunfermline to bounce back with a further converted try – emanating from uncontrolled ball at the base of a Morgan scrum – and a penalty.

Whist a bonus point winning victory for Morgan over Perthshire is never considered commonplace, especially for those of “the Poacher’s” vintage, it seems that almost everyone is achieving that this season, with the result that our neighbours are now deep in the relegation zone. So, a satisfactory result was achieved despite a “slow” start and, surprisingly with the postponement of our game at Falkirk last week - due no doubt to inclement weather at “Sunnyside”, what a misnomer- we find ourselves in second place in the league, with a game in hand over the rest of the top four. With the prospect of a rugby free Saturday looming, “the Poacher” along with “last of the summer wine club” stalwart, Dereks Black and Miller - former President Adam was taking the chance of building up a few “brownie points” by taking Maureen to some romantic love nest in Yorkshire for a few days R & R - travelled to darkest Fife to take in the Kirkcaldy v Garnock game to cast a collective experienced eye over the team from Ayrshire who had, perhaps surprisingly, defeated Kirkcaldy in the Shield final last May.

The most used expression around the Clubrooms after last week’s narrow 20 points to 18 victory over Irvine was that Morgan had used a “get out of jail free” card; such was the closeness of the result and the lateness of the winning score.

...in the second half a perfectly good try was captured on camera, only to be discounted by the ref who was unsighted at the time – sponsored by Specsavers!!!

However, on reflection, “the Poacher” is of the opinion that the margin should have been much greater, given that Morgan spent most of the first 40 minutes in Irvine territory and with a little more composure on the ball could indeed have scored three or four tries and been out of sight by half time. Furthermore, in the second half a perfectly good try was captured on camera, only to be discounted by the ref who was unsighted at the time – sponsored by Specsavers!!!

As holidays intervened, it was a small but relatively select band of supporters who braved the elements at Dumbreck, to cheer on Morgan to a well-deserved if somewhat rare victory in Glasgow, which saw us into third spot in the league table on 20 points, just behind Garnock on “goal difference” and just ahead of Dunfermline also on “goal difference”. In the Kiddie (senior) vehicle were Messrs. Ramsay OBE, Gold and Stephenson, whilst in “the Poacher’s” carriage were Messrs. Adam, Black and Kerr – so no shortage of well balanced and researched discussion in the Cartha clubrooms then!  It was a victory won late in the game when the referee awarded Morgan a penalty try for repeated infringement by the home front row and this resulted in the Cartha coach berating the referee after the final whistle – a pointless exercise which will do nothing for Cartha’s chances should they and the ref ‘s paths cross in future. Well done also to Morgan 2s for beating Gordonians on their own patch last week, albeit narrowly, by 18 points to 17.
